Arsenal ace David Luiz has called the defenders to take more responsibility following the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday. The Gunners were widely fancied to win the encounter but they found themselves in a heap of trouble after conceding twice in the opening 41 minutes.
Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos were both guilty of conceding the opening goal while Granit Xhaka was completely at blame for the second after he conceded a reckless penalty. Despite this, the Gunners were able to salvage a point after goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but the result was still disappointing for a section of the fans.
Speaking after the game, Luiz said that the defenders should take responsibility for the defeat and should take any criticism in a good way, he told Sky Sports: “The defenders have to take responsibility and take [criticism] in a good way, in a humble way. We need to understand when we make a mistake and say that.”
Meanwhile, Luiz was culpable for a couple of errors during the recent 3-1 defeat at Liverpool and that was followed up with another cautious performance during the north London derby. When pressed on the same, the Brazilian said that he is not overly concerned by the recent run of form with the Gunners.
He added: “I’m going to try to do my best always. My game until the penalty at Liverpool was very good, especially for our first big game. Even with pain I played the whole game and tried to show spirit until the very end. I am trying to improve with the team every single day. You have to be mature to understand this kind of moment.”
Arsenal are currently fifth on the league table following the 2-2 draw against Spurs. They are scheduled to tackle Watford on the road when they return from the international break.
